St Pauls Cathedral, West Front
Description
Stonewest were appointed to carry out the cleaning and restoration works to the west elevation and steps of St Paul's Cathedral; the works were split into 2 phases.
The works involved:
Phase 1
- Consisting of the cleaning and repair works to the Portland stone facade and twin towers.
- For the cleaning works Hodge Clemco wet abrasive system was used.
- Extensive recarving and indenting of embellishments.
Phase 2
- Comprising careful removal of west steps and landings and relaying on new foundations.
- Concise recording of each itemised stone was required to ensure that the steps were re-laid in the original order to achieve the profile (entasis) and level following the line of the original Wren works.
Works also included:
- Replacement of the landings in new marble and cleaning and repair of existing steps in specially sourced matching materials.
- Our working approach involved minimum intervention to the existing fabric to ensure the historic appearance was preserved.
- The scaffolding incorporated a barpole banner simulating the facade known to the visiting public and tourists.
