Birmingham Town Hall (Award Winner)
Description
The building, by Hansom, is based on the Temple of Castor and Pollux in Rome. He used Anglesey marble for the external masonry, which has extensively eroded in the city centre environment. The Birmingham Town hall is a Grade I listed concert and meeting venue.
The works involved:
- Stone cleaning using DOFF hot water.
- Replacement of embellishment – mainly columns, capitals and pediment cornice modillions.
- Lime plastering repair and replacement of Soffits.
- Indenting to window surroundings and Podium Wall.
- New stone was sourced from the original Aber quarry on Anglesey and Stancliffe/ Saterwath ( a very similar stone from Cumbria but more suited for the carving details).
- Grouting of voids behind the masonry finishes.
- Stitching of fractures in window heads.
- Shelter Coat to the entire façade.
- Conservation repairs.
- Lime washing.
- Internal ornamental lime plasterwork to walls and ceilings.
- Gold leaf detailing.
