Hampstead Synagogue
Description
The building had seen reduced usage over the years due to its dated and inadequate facilities. The interior was dark, cold and unwelcoming with a poor central heating system and tired decorations. Following a successful fund raising appeal, architects were engaged to develop a scheme to bring the synagogue back up to its original splendor.
The works involved:
- Comprehensive external roof repairs including slate and lead work.
- Replacement of cast iron gutters and downpipes.
- Masonry cleaning and repairs to the brick facades.
- Uncovering and renewal of asbestos from beneath flooring.
- Refurbishment of existing joinery including pews.
- Manufacture and installation of new joinery, pews and ornate carpentry.
- Complete internal refurbishment of all decorative finishes including ornate plaster repairs and renewal.
- Removal and replacement of the original central heating system.
- New wiring and lighting schemes.
- Alterations and installation of new toilets and new kitchen.
- New fire alarm system.
- External ground works and paving.
