St Pauls Cathedral, South Churchyard (Award Winner)
Description
The creation of a new public space to the South side of the Cathedral with grassed areas and intricate inlaid paving and walls forming the out line of the previous Cathedral before The Great Fire of London.
The works involved:
- The site had been subject to detailed archeological surveys over a number of years establishing the location of historic building.
- During the site clearance and groundwork to install new drainage an archeological watching brief took place which resulted in careful hand digging taking place around the original foundations.
- Using a combination of Purbeck stones including Barnfield Whetson, Feather and Grub the footprint of the Cloisters and Chapter House have been meticulously re created. The elaborate detailed inlay was all hand worked to very fine tolerances.
- Original wrought iron railings taken from long term storage have been re fixed into new Portland stone boundary walls matching other original walls on the North side.
