Birmingham Town Hall (Award Winner)
Description
The building, by Hansom, is based on the Temple of Castor and Pollux in Rome. He used Anglesey marble for the external masonry, which has extensively eroded in the city centre environment.
Following major survey works, the following works were carried out:
The works involved:
- Stone cleaning using Doff hot water.
- Replacement of embellishment – mainly columns, capitals and pediment cornice modillions.
- Indenting to window surrounds and Podium Wall.
- New stone was sourced from the original Aber quarry on Anglesey and Stancliffe/Salterwath (a very similar stone from Cumbria but more suited for the carving details).
- Grouting of voids behinds the masonry finishes.
- Stitching of fractures in window heads.
- Shelter Coat to the entire façade.
- Conservation repairs.
