Battle of Britain Monument (Commended)
Description
Following Stonewest's successful appointment, the Company started on site with the careful dismantling and alteration of the existing granite structure originally designed as a smoke outlet for underground trains in the days of steam it was now to be used as the main support for the bronze sculptures.
The works involved:
- Built over brick vaults additional strengthening of the foundations was carried out prior to commencement of the reconstruction work.
- The design required that a walkway was cut obliquely through the middle, salvaged granite was removed from site and re worked to new profiles, new matching granite sourced from Aberdeenshire, Scotland, was also used for copings.
- Working to a very strict programme to conside with the unveiling date one of the most challenging yet rewarding moments of the contract came with the delivery and craning in to position of the bronze relief's weighing two tons each and eight metres long.
- John McCrea, Stonewest Contracts Manager, said "The architect and Sculptor have designed and created a truly fitting monument to those so few yet making it accessible to so many".
