Palace of Westminster - Westminster Hall
Description
Following successful trials in 2005 and award of the main works, Stonewest began the careful removal and salvage of paving and steps from the West end of the historic Westminster Hall to allow strengthening of the foundations.
The works involved:
- The floor was first carefully surveyed and mapped onto a scaled floor plan identifying the paving to be removed.
- The half tonne paving slabs were lifted with the aid of a powered vacuum lifter to help minimise damage and then clearly numbered to ensure they were relayed in their original location and orientation, the slabs were then carefully palletised and removed from site to secure covered storage.
- Dwarf brick walls were removed prior to the strengthening of the foundations; these were then rebuilt and the paving re-laid.
- Lime water and shelter coat repairs to friable masonry to the gable end ashlar walling of the Grand Committee Room off Westminster Hall.
- Lime mortar repairs to external masonry of Pearson wall within Cromwell Green.
