Project Update

Stonewest is undertaking a number of projects on the South Coast, include our contribution to raising and strengthening the new Sea Walls for The Southsea Coastal Scheme.

The Southsea Coastal Scheme has reached a major milestone with the completion of Frontage 1, we now move forward to the new phase of activity. Vitally important, this is the UK’s largest local authority-led, coastal defences project. It will protect tens of thousands of homes, businesses and amenities from the risk of flooding for the next 100 years.  Appointed by Volker Stevin, Stonewest carried out the handset masonry element of constructing the new, raised sea wall. We used specifically designed marine engineering mortars with bespoke joint sizes for the installation of the new Purbeck stone units, to futureproof the flood defences whilst supporting marine life in the area.

Flooding is one of the biggest environmental challenges facing Portsmouth. At the current rate of global emissions, sea level in the area is likely to rise by 32cm over the next three decades.

The Southsea Costal Scheme is the UK’s largest local authority-led costal defence project, creating new flood defences to protect hundreds of local homes and businesses. Stonewest is proud to be contributing to this important project.

LATEST NEWS:  Adjacent to the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, we will adjust the promenade level, dismantle steps, and raise the existing masonry seats and planters to suit the reconfigured elements of the sea defences, for improved pedestrian access. We will also extend the walls to tie into the main secondary defence, earthwork embankment.
