Taking Action for Positive Mental Health
Stonewest NewsBy Amanda Treadwell, Mental Health First Aider
This year’s theme for Mental Health Awareness Week (11-17 May) is ‘Action’, encouraging people to take positive steps to support mental health.
Most adults spend at least a third of their time at work, and simple actions can help to improve workplace mental health. This week is a timely reminder that wellbeing matters in every industry. Mental health is not a side conversation – it’s central to how we live, work, and connect with one another.
Construction is a sector built on resilience, long hours, and getting the job done. But behind the hard hats and deadlines are real people facing stress, pressure, and, too often, silence around mental health. It’s time we changed that.
Creating a culture where people feel comfortable speaking up is essential. Whether it’s checking in with a colleague, encouraging open conversations, or making support visible and accessible on-site, small actions can make a big difference.
A few simple things we can all do:
- Check in with a colleague, and genuinely listen
- Take a break when you need it, without guilt
- Speak openly and listen, without judgement
At Stonewest, we are committed to building environments where people feel supported, heard, and valued. If you work in the construction industry, take a moment this week to start a conversation. You never know who might need it. Remember, progress, not perfection, is what matters. Let’s keep the conversation going beyond this week.
Mental Health Awareness Week (11-17 May) is run by the Mental Health Foundation, which offers support and helpful resources. Learn more here.
