Project Overview

The Southsea Coastal Scheme is the UK’s largest local authority-led coastal defences project, worth more than £130m. It will stretch for 4.5Km from Old Portsmouth to Eastney and help to reduce the risk of flooding to more than 10,000 homes and 700 businesses. We are proud to be the Heritage masonry contractor of choice installing new handset masonry to many areas whilst also undertaking delicate and considerate masonry conservation work to the Scheduled Monuments and numerous Heritage assets forming part of the sea wall defences. As part of the overall project Stonewest have undertaken a scheme of masonry conservation to the 400-year-old Southsea Castle.

Works Involved

  • Masonry conservation repairs to the 400-year-old coastal wall of Henry VIII’s own fortification
  • Installation of new Portland limestone indents to match the historic coping detailing where eroded
  • Repointing of fine joints and deep filling of large joints
  • Stabilisation of masonry units
  • Taking down and rebuilding of areas of unstable masonry
  • Deep filling of any wall voids
  • Lime mortar work only
  • Removal of corroded and modern ferramenta
  • Testing and removal of deleterious materials
  • Specialist waste removals
