Case Study

Client: Commissioners of the Royal Hospital
Architect: Quinlan Francis Terry
Principal Contractor: Wates Construction
Specialist Contractor: Stonewest

Project Overview

Stonewest used a combination of Anstrude Roche Clair and Messangis Clair stone imported from France especially for the project of recreating a representation of the original hospital a short walk from the project site.  The Royal Chelsea Hospital is a Grade I Listed building.

Key Successes

  • The works included Classical load bearing masonry, using 3mm joints with very fine tolerances during the manufacture and fixing of the stones.
  • The new build structure implemented traditional masonry techniques, such as the use of lime mortar.
  • Stonewest also implemented an on-site quality control system, thoroughly checking over all stones upon delivery to make sure that only the finest quality materials were used on the project.
