Project Overview

Previously the Victoria Road Detention Centre situated on Mount Davis, the award-winning conservation and revitalisation of the heritage buildings converted the Grade 3 historic buildings into the University of Chicago Heritage Courtyard and Interpretation Centre as well as classrooms and a variety of student spaces whilst retaining unique features such as the disused battery gun emplacement.

Stonewest (HK) commenced works on the conservation package which required the involvement of numerous disciplines ranging from traditional lime stucco plasterwork, teak parquet floor repairs and the restoration of existing Crittall windows.

Key Successes

  • Design, supply and installation of Crittall windows with matching profiles to the original.
  • Reinstatement of the coved ceilings using traditional lime plastering materials and techniques.
  • Dismantling, repair and reinstatement of timber features such as teak parquet flooring and skirting, timber window frames and doors.
  • Joint survey of the external façade and subsequent repair of the defective render prior to redecoration.
  • Cleaning and repair of heritage stone fireplace.
