Project Overview

Grade I* listed St Pancras International is a 19th century station, designed by William Henry Barlow.  The site was constructed by Midland Railway and at the time of development had the largest single-span roof in the world.   In the late 1960s, plans were made to demolish the station entirely leading to fierce opposition. However, the station underwent an £800 million refurbishment and became the terminal for the Channel Tunnel Rail Link/HS1, which was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 2007.

Key Successes

  • Cleaning using the DOFF cleaning method.
  • After the cleaning process, Stonewest carried out a thorough inspection of the existing masonry and produced detailed façade repair surveys, photographs and annotated elevation drawings identifying individual defects and the proposed repairs.
  • Surveying, restoring, conserving and repairing masonry walls which included the restoration of over 300 gauged, red-rubber brick and limestone voussoir arches.
