Project Overview

In response to a Historic Royal Palaces (HRP) initiative to engage with a masonry conservation specialist, HRP invited Stonewest to work on a framework agreement basis to undertake masonry conservation and repair work to some key aspects of the historic assets within their care. This UNESCO heritage site is frequented by tens of thousands of people daily and is of prime consideration and concern to HRP and The Tower of London.

Key Successes

  • Framework project requiring our early-stage consultancy input with the Historic Royal Palaces to determine the repair works required.
  • Detailed recording and scheduling of the Tower Kentish Rag and Limestone dressings.
  • Dismantle and salvage of all masonry materials. Demolition of Victorian roof structure and installation of new timber roof and lead work.
  • Procurement of repair materials. Detailed mortar analysis, design and sampling for repairs.
  • Re-building and consolidation of Tower walling, stone repairs, repointing (brick, charcoal, and large aggregate inclusions).
  • Deep filling of wall voids and stabilisation of Kentish Rag walling.
  • Coping stones pinned and re-bedded.
  • Hydraulic Lime mortar work only.
  • Wrought and cast-iron rainwater goods refurbished, repairs to window ferramenta, redecorations, bespoke scaffolding erected within moat area.
