Project Overview

The project involves the redevelopment of the 10-acre site in downtown Yangon, comprising of luxury apartments and offices. The centre piece will be the restored headquarters of the Burma Railway Company which is to be hotel for the Peninsula Group.

Following a full-scale mock-up to one bay of the existing façade, Stonewest (MYM) was awarded the Conservation Package which entailed the extensive restoration of the external facades.

Key Successes

  • Façade paint removal using Thermatech steam cleaning method
  • Joint inspections with the architect to agree façade repair schedules
  • Restoration of the existing laterite and brick façades.
  • Testing and desalination of the masonry using specialist poultices.
  • Establishment of a local quarry manufacturing capability to ensure supply of matching laterite to international CSR standards.
  • Restoration of heritage timber handrails alongside the design, supply and installation of new teak elements.
  • Cleaning, restoration and re-installation of a wide range of original cast iron features including balustrades, grilles and 200 no. heritage canopies.
  • Supply of new locally supplied castings, for repair and replacement cast iron works.
