Project Overview

The restoration of the Qasr Al Hosn Fort, regarded as Abu Dhabi’s symbolic birth place has successfully preserved its rich historic value and transformed it into a tourism and cultural destination at the heart of the UAE’s capital Abu Dhabi.

The project includes the restoration of three highly significant structures in the history and life of Abu Dhabi, the Original Watchtower, the Inner Fort and the Outer Palace.

Stonewest (HK) were appointed as the specialist heritage contractor to oversee all key character defining heritage elements.

Key Successes

  • Sampling and analysing of historic mortars and renders to allow the development of modern versions for use throughout the restoration.
  • The surveying and careful removal of 1980’s concrete elements and cementitious renders followed by their reinstatement in traditional sea stone, mangrove wood and lime mortar.
  • Rebuilding of 50+ stone arches using traditional materials and techniques.
  • 150 tons of low-pressure grouting to large areas of highly voided masonry walls.
  • Enabling works for and the installation of numerous temporary works schemes prior to the removal and rebuilding of significant masonry elements.
  • The recording, careful takedown and rebuilding of a 50m long 7m high fort boundary wall.
  • Termite treatment, splicing and conservation of historic timber elements.
  • The full management and delivery of the conservation and restoration of the 1760’s Original Watchtower.
