Project Overview

The Race Course Fire Memorial, Wan Chai, Hong Kong is a privately-owned Declared Monument. It was erected in memory to those who were killed in the Happy Valley Racecourse fire on 26 February 1918.

The memorial was completed in 1922, and is currently managed by the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals.

Located next to Hong Kong Stadium. The site was added to the list of declared monuments by the Antiquities and Monuments Office in 2015.

Stonewest (HK) project scope comprised primarily of general building maintenance and minor repair works to the pagodas, pavilions, memorial arch, balustrades and parapet wall.

Key Successes

  • Restoration of the fair-faced concrete balustrades and parapet walls.
  • Repair and repainting of all pavilions, pagodas and concrete tools.
  • Sourcing, careful dismantling and reinstatement works to the roof tiles.
  • Repair of defective hinges and repainting of entrance metal gates.
  • Deep cleaning of drains and removal of all vegetation.
